How it all Started; A true story told by a modern mama
Being a modern day mother of multiple children in my 30's I feel extremely drawn to settle for convenience. On the other hand I feel even more compelled to break the cycle of mindlessly filling our home with store bought, chemical loaded, food and skincare for my family to consume. Growing up I was never taught awareness of food labels and reading ingredients, this is something I picked up in my mid 20’s striving to become a more health conscious individual. I went through a time of terror as the veil was lifted. I watched and listened as my fellow people banded together to form a community determined to know exactly how these harmful toxins are reeking havoc in our bodies and as they began to defensively seek ways to provide a healthier, more natural alternative. A few years later, my husband and I aligned with this movement, we took back leadership over our home and transformed the health and wellness of our family. Throughout this process we’ve discovered a passion so deep and completely overflowing.
I have gained so much knowledge and insight to the point of feeling on fire to share what I've come to know with as many people that will listen. I believe with all my heart I am living out my god given destiny to make a difference in the health and wellness in my community and hopefully beyond, as far as we can possibly reach.
We are your average momma and papa, who started out determined to change the oil we use to cook our food, and where we choose to buy our meats and produce. We found a very passionate and hard working couple, Marco and Cassidy, with a little farm in the Santa Ynez valley called Motley Crew farm. They process all their own cattle that are pasture raised, grass fed and finished. We signed up for a monthly subscription of meats and eggs, unbeknown that this was the first step to a whole would of change for us. Once they got their store up and running, we visited with them a few times a month, getting to know them more each time and creating a genuine friendship.
One of our conversations led to me expressing my interest in crafting a moisturizer made from beef tallow. Marco's face lit up as he excitedly explained he had the motherload of tallow in his freezer and he'd be happy to let me have as much as I wanted. You can imagine the joy in my heart, as I'd been searching for high quality tallow for quite a few months at this point.
I then spent all the downtime I had over the next few months (which wasn’t much as a pregnant mom of two, but just enough) experimenting, learning, and failing forward. I stayed up late watching tourtial after tourtial, reading page after page about the rendering process, benefits of tallow skincare, getting to know the history and figuring out everything I possibly could. My husband partnered with me and was the biggest supporter of my new found passion. He met me with loads of enthusiasm to be my first test subject, encouragement every single time a product didn’t come out right, and bought all the equipment I needed to get the results I so eagerly anticipated. It was a process that I 95% of the time sincerely enjoyed. I hit the finish line one lovely day in December 2024. I finally felt proud of my creation and decided to gift it to my family members, a few close friends, and of course our friends at Motley that made it all possible. The feedback I got was overwhelmingly positive! I was told over and over again, "You have to make more! You have to start scaling and selling this. It's amazing, and people are going to love it!".
So we gave it a name, and began our journey in figuring out the inner workings of the skincare industry. Our friends and family were right, people truly do love it. We pressed on and created our Instagram and website. Offered samples everywhere we went and it has snowballed since.
I really could not express enough that our goal has never been to mass produce a mediocre product because it's trendy and we want a slice of the pie. This business was built on a foundation of desire to nourish our family with chemical free moisturizer. It's organically grown into us wanting to replace as many hygiene products as we possibly can from moisturizer, to sun screen, diaper rash cream for our baby, to deodorant, soaps, and beyond. We have so many ideas and so much determination. Our love and new found respect for tallow has grown tremendously. We are so pumped to connect with each and every like minded person looking to make some healthy changes to their skincare routines. I never intended to start a business but I am so grateful god has blessed me to run with this and I am stoked to use my creative abilities in a way I am proud of.
Our bodies are a temple, they are to be nourished and protected. Our skin is our biggest and most sensitive organ, what we feed it, or products we put on it matters. Look at the ingredients in your skincare, check the warnings. If it's dangerous to be consumed, I ask you to really think about this. If it's poison to eat, is it really safe to use?
